Itinerary

Day 1: Welcome to Rome

Panoramic walking tour / Duration: 4 hrs

  • Trevi fountain – the most famous, beautiful Baroque fountain of the city, throwing in a coin and you will return to Rome
  • Piazza Mignanelli – location of the Spanish Embassy in Vatican and column of Immaculate conception surrounded by local legends
  • Spanish Steps – 135 steps connecting the Trinity dei Monti church and the Spanish Embassy
  • Trinita’ dei Monti church and the Obelisk
  • Pincio panoramic terrace in Villa Borghese Park offering one the best views of Rome
  • Piazza del Popolo was the location of Nero’s tomb today of one the most beautiful churches of Rome – St. Mary in Popolo church
  • Via del Babbuino – coffee in Cafe’ Canova Tadolini, the ex-workshop of the famous sculptor

 

Day 2: Discover Ancient Rome

Duration: 5-6 hrs

  • Piazza del Campidoglio – a square on Capitoline hill, designed by Michelangelo with the best view of the Roman Forums 
  • Roman Forum – the ancient center of religion, politics and trade of the Roman Empire
  • Imperial Forums – built by Ceasar, Traian, Augustus and Nerva 
  • Palatine hill – once the palaces of Emperors, later transformed into gardens of noblemen
  • Colosseum – or as the real name Flavian Amphitheatre is symbol of Rome once housing  gladiator combats, animal fights, naval battles, later a place of prayers and religion
  • Arch of Constantinus – (the emperor who legalized Christianity) as message of imperial propaganda

 

Day 3: Jewish Rome

Walking tour / Duration: 3 hrs

  • Trastevere – Translating to “across the Tiber River”, the district of original Jewish settlements
  • Vicolo dell Atleta – ruins of the old synagogue
  • Isola Tiberina – mysterious, healing Island on Tiber River in shape of an ancient Roman boat 
  • Portico of Octavia – once a place of libraries and temples, important meetings of Ancient Rome, now transformed into fish market and churches
  • The Theatre of Marcellus – the prototype of Colosseum
  • Ex-Jewish “Ghetto” – legends and stories of the past and food tasting today

 

Day 4: Wonders of the Ancient World

Walking tour / Duration: 4-5 hrs

  • Archeological area of Largo Argentina – ruins of four temples of an enormous theatre and the curia (place of senate’s meetings) location of the assassination of Julius Caesar
  • Pantheon – the best preserved monument of Antiquity, an ancient pagan temple dedicated to all Gods turned into a Basilica of St. Mary and the Martyrs, burial place of Raffael and two Italian kings
  • Piazza Navona – an athletic stadium in Roman times transformed into the most beautiful square of Rome with 3 fountains, the most famous being The Fountain of Quattro Fiumi
  • Undergrounds of Stadium of Domitian
  • Ara Pacis – altar of peace built by Emperor Augustus, symbol of the Golden Age of Ancient Rome, of Peace and Prosperity
  • Castle Sant’ Angelo – originally a mausoleum of Emperor Hadrian, later a fortress and castle of the Popes, now a museum

 

Day 5: Vatican Museums, St Peter’s Square & Cathedral

Duration: 5 hrs

Visiting the most important cathedral of the Catholic religion and the location of papal audiences

The Vatican Museums including the Pio Clementino Museum, The Gallery of Candelabras, Gallery of Tapestry and Gallery of Maps, the Sistine Chapel and the Rooms of Raffael.

 

Day 6: Excursion to Roman Castles

Duration: 7 hrs

A group of small towns located near Rome, places of summer retreats of nobility in the times of Roman Empire, evolving into fortifications, medieval castles and cities surrounded by olive trees and vineyards growing on volcanic soil.

  • Castel Gandolfo – city above a deep lake of vulcanian origin, summer residence of the Popes
  • Rocca di Papa – city on the rocks 
  • Grottaferrata – ancient abbey of St. Nilo from 1004
  • Frascati – Noble villas with lush parks, lunch and wine tasting
